WHAT’S THE BEST TIME OF DAY FOR A SESSION?
For outdoor portraits, times early in the morning, just before dinner (winter) or just after dinner (summer) provide the most flattering light. Midday sun is harsh and produces hard shadows. Weather is a factor; if it’s raining, too cold, or just poor weather in general, we will need to reschedule at no additional cost to you.
Most importantly, let’s choose a time of day when your children are at their peak and will be well rested. Better to schedule the session when everyone is at their happiest time of day even if it means less than ideal lighting conditions!
WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR?
Your choice of clothing is important! Blue jeans or khakis with solid shirts work well for a casual look. On the other hand, for a more modern “fashion” look, feel free to bring along some trendier outfits with fun and fashionable colors. Don’t be afraid of bold colors and rich textures, however all prints, including logos or characters, are not recommended. Prints and patterns work best in small doses like polka dotted socks, flowered scarves or paisley vests.
Layering works well during photo shoots because then you can slip articles of clothing on and off to slightly change your look.
Portraits generally focus on the face, primarily the eyes, so as a general rule of thumb clothing should be lightest near the face and get progressively darker with the pants and shoes. For this reason, dark-colored dress shoes or bare feet are preferred, white tennis shoes are very distracting. When in doubt, feel free to choose several outfits, and I will help you decide which will photograph the best.
For family portraits, choose colors in the same tonal range so that no single individual stands out. I prefer coordinated looks rather than matching. Everyone in the portrait does not need to wear the exact same clothing, just use colors within the same color family.
SHOULD I BRING ANY PROS?
My photography sessions are all unique experiences that are made even more special with your creative contributions. Feel free to bring along items that you can wear, hold or place near you such as; toys, stuffed animals, oversized lollipops, balloons, costumes, chairs, sunglasses, blankets, flowers, picnic baskets and wineglasses and anything else that speaks to you. I will also have many props we can use too.
