Decide on what style you want to express (dressy, hippie, casual, preppy, sporty, etc). With that style “push” it more than you normally do. This is an appropriate time to “go all out”! Within your outfits, you can change the look slightly by adding and removing accessories & layers (hats, vest, over shirts, sunglasses, scarves, jewelry, etc). Portraits generally focus on the face, primarily the eyes, so as a general rule of thumb clothing should be lightest near the face and get progressively darker with the pants and shoes. For this reason, dark-colored dress shoes or boots are preferred, white tennis shoes are very distracting. When in doubt, feel free to choose several outfits, and I will help you decide which will photograph the best.
Bring a variety of colors and styles. For example, you may bring your prom dress or another dressy dress, a cool funky jeans outfit, a casual short outfit and one conservative outfit. The longer your session, the more outfit changes you should bring. Also be sure to bring an outfit that’s appropriate for your yearbook and one your parents will like you in!
PROPS , If you are holding a beloved possession, it can add visual interest, express personality and give you something to interact with. So I encourage you to bring some props! Ideas for props to hold or place near you: books, creative tools (musical instruments, drawing pads, etc) sport equipment, bikes, anything vintage or unusual objects, balloons, flowers, banners and garland, costumes, tiaras, capes, accessories that go with costumes, sunglasses, hats, scarves, sunglasses, pretty blankets, pillows, chairs, picnic set up, other furniture, your car, motorcycle or scooter, Letterman jacket and anything else that speaks to you.
POSES AND IDEAS Research, research, research! Google Senior Photos or thumb through magazines and look at the poses, backgrounds, clothing styles, etc. It’s a huge help for us AND you if we both know what you’re trying to get out of our shoot. Everyone’s style is different and I want you to love the way you look in each photo!
