Why YOU should be in your photos with your newborn.

Photos with your newborn

From time to time women will contact me about photographing their newborn baby and they will ask if I can just photograph their little babe. She doesn’t want to be in the photos, nor does her husband.

First I will ask her if there’s a reason why she doesn’t want to be in the photos. Her answer is usually some sort of answer that amounts to “because I don’t like how I look right now”.

So I’m writing this blog post for you new mamas. The first year after having a baby is the time when moms are most scared about having their photo taken. I get it…. You might be holding some extra baby weight, you have bags under your eyes because of your lack of sleep, and you haven’t washed your hair in days. So you’re not exactly feeling photo-ready! So instead you’ll take thousands of photos of your new bundle of joy, thinking you’ll get in the photos when you look normal again. Well I hate to say it, but what if you never get back into your pre-baby skinny jeans? Does that mean you’ll never have a photo taken with your child?

But we really need to make an effort to get in the picture. Our sons need to see how young and beautiful and human their mamas were. Our daughters need to see us vulnerable and open and just being ourselves — women, mamas, people living lives. Avoiding the camera because we don’t like to see our own pictures? How can that be okay? What will we be teaching child about self love?

Too much of a mama’s life goes undocumented and unseen. People, including my children, don’t know how I walk the grocery store aisles looking for treats and plan their favorite meals. They don’t see me tossing and turning in bed wondering if I am doing an okay job as a mother, if they’re okay in school, where we should go on vacation, what we should do for their birthdays. They don’t see any of that.

I’m everywhere in their young lives, and yet I don’t have that many pictures of me with them. Someday I won’t be here — and I don’t know if that someday is tomorrow or thirty or forty years from now — but I want them to have pictures of me. I want them to see the way I looked at them, see how much I loved them. I am not perfect to look at and I am not perfect to love, but I am perfectly their mother.

So when all is said and done, if I can’t do it for myself, I want to do it for my kids. I want to be in the picture, to give them that visual memory of me. I want them to see how much I am here, how my body looks wrapped around them in a hug, how loved they are.

I hope you will decide to do this for your child too. It’s worth it, believe me. My parents are gone now and I treasure the photos I have of them.

I’m happy to photograph your baby alone BUT I will be thrilled to photograph you WITH your baby.

So as you know babies grow VERY quickly and they move out of that tiny, curly newborn phase very quickly so if you’re interested in having a Newborn or BABY photo session at your home or a beautiful outdoor setting, contact me soon. Let’s chat. Let’s talk about your family and you can let me know your wishes and needs. We can find ways to help you feel at ease.

I adopted my children when my son was one and my daughter was two and a half so I don’t have ANY pictures of myself with them as newborns. I wish I did but here’s a few snapshots that I treasure. My kiddos are teens now so these are a few of us when they were little. I love them and wish I had more!
