Ahhh, Mother’s Day–that special day set aside for those amazing women in our lives. And oh, the pressure! What to do to make it a special day? If a family lunch at Applebees isn’t good enough, and a weekend at the beach isn’t an option, perhaps you want to go the gift route. But what gift could possibly show her just how amazing she is? A lotion/bubble bath gift basket? Maybe. But, another great idea is to give Mom a way to remember her family for years to come by giving her new family portraits.
Linnae Designs Gift Certificates are available for Mother’s day or any special event. The gift card covers the session fee that can be used anytime in the next 12 months. Contact me today to order yours!

Mother’s Day is approaching. It’s May 14th, for those of you who didn’t know. When my kids were younger, they would surprise me with breakfast in bed and lots of homemade gifts. It was a tradition for the three of us to hang out in my bed and eat frozen waffles with strawberries and TONS of whipped cream. I would open their presents and exclaim how much I loved their drawings, duct tape art and 3D creations. I really did love them.
Now my kiddos are 14 and 16 and well, let’s just say that Mother’s Day is easily forgotten – I mean it’s usually forgotten. Now it’s just like every other day. Mama doesn’t get the special treatment anymore.
As far as they are concerned there’s nothing special to this magical day, so this year I have a plan. Since there’s not another adult in our household to remind them, this tasks falls on me. I am prepping my kids way in advance. I’m letting them know they can start making their gifts now or if they wanna get really fancy they can buy me a little something. This year is gonna rock! I’ll make sure of it.
Here’s some neat gift ideas for all the Mother’s out there. I hope your awesome day rocks. If not, start hinting now…..

This could be kept in her purse as a map of the stars with your own message or drawing on the back (pencil included), making it a wooden card and special keepsake gift in one item.
You can choose the front of the card to include the word ‘Mum’, ‘Mummy’, ‘Grandma’ or no name at all, so it would then just say ‘Love you more than all the stars’.

I adopted my son and daughter from Russian orphanages in 2003. I don’t spend time thinking about what their lives would have been like had they not been adopted. I don’t think about it because I just can’t “go there”. When I do allow my thoughts to drift in that direction, I mostly think about the other children and babies that I saw while I was there. I hope and pray that their lives have been blessed by adoption as well.
My daughter was two when I met her for the first time. She lived in a very small village hospital in Komsomolsk. This orphanage had about a dozen 0-3 year olds living in a 400 square foot room. There was a fenced in yard with a small dirt playground. I was told that they didn’t leave the property because it wasn’t safe. She spent her entire existence in that small space. The “mamas” seemed to genuinely care for them and did their best, but they were extremely busy. They had a lot do to and too many kids to care for at one time.
She had no toys to call her own and the kids fought over the few toys that were there. Once the adoption was final, I was able to take her to a hotel. She spent the first week wearing as many clothes as she could put on her body (even though it was summer) and she carried a child sized backpack filled with her toys everywhere she went. She even slept with it and wouldn’t let go of it until sleep over took her.
My son was 10 months when I met him for the first time. He had the chicken pox and so did most of the other three hundred 0-3 year olds. He was in a large baby home in Khabarovsk and the pox had spread rapidly through this little community. The medicine they used to treat the pox was dark green so he was covered in red and green dots. I affectionately called him my “alien baby”.
He had a fever and a very runny nose for the 3 days I was visiting. They didn’t give him any medicine to ease these symptoms nor would they allow me to give him any. When I returned to adopt him 3 months later, he had a very runny nose and once I was able to take him to an American doctor, I learned that he had a ear infection. The doctor suspected that he had for quite some time. The orphanage didn’t have money to spend on medicine that only soothed and didn’t heal illnesses.
I don’t want to give the impression that these orphanages were horrible, because they weren’t. Both were clean and the staff seemed friendly but there was never enough money to do what they needed to do. My children and I always save money throughout the year and donate it to a charity that gives to Russian orphanages. It’s not much in the whole scheme of things but every little bit helps. This year I wanted to find a cause that my business could support. After some extensive research, I decided on the non-profit, Forever Family.
Linnae Designs supports Forever Family by donating 5% of the proceeds from every session booked.
Forever Family produces news stories that highlight children in North Carolina foster care who are searching for adoptive families, teens ‘aging out’ of foster care, and issues relating to the American foster care crisis. More info at http://foreverfamily.org
If anyone has questions or would like to speak to me about my adoption journey, please don’t hesitate to contact me! I had an amazing experience and have two healthy, happy children. Here are some “Then” and “Now” photos.
